BAG WITH GOLF CLUBS OF AUTOMOTIVE DRIVER ALBERTO ASCARI
BAG with original golf clubs by ALBERTO ASCARI
Provenance: private collection of the Ascari family
Alberto Ascari (Milan, 13 July 1918 – Monza, 26 May 1955) was an Italian car driver and motorcycle racer, winner of the Formula 1 world champion title in 1952 and 1953.
In the top automotive series he contested a total of thirty-two Grands Prix, winning thirteen and reaching the podium seventeen times. He also obtained fourteen pole positions and lined up on the front row twenty-five times. He is the last Italian driver to have won the world drivers' title and for 71 years he held the record for the highest percentage of victories in a season: in fact in 1952 he won six of the eight races on the calendar, a record broken only in 2023 by Max Verstappen.
In that year he won the world championship with the maximum possible points (which was later achieved only by Jim Clark in 1963 and 1965). The record for fastest laps achieved in consecutive races also belongs to Ascari: seven, starting from the 1952 Belgian Grand Prix and ending with the 1953 Argentine Grand Prix.
A complete driver, he had a precise driving style that respected the mechanical means; [2] he also used to set a very high race pace in the early stages of the race and then manage the advantage he had accumulated. He was also able to distinguish himself with covered-wheel cars.
His best results were a second place in the 1951 Carrera Panamericano, victory in the Sestriere Rallye in the same year, success in the 1000 km of the Nürburgring in 1953 and finally victory on a Lancia D24 in the 1954 Mille Miglia.
He also took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1952 and 1953 driving a Ferrari and on both occasions achieved the fastest lap in the race.
«I only obey a passion. The races. I wouldn't know how to live without it.]"
