Antique Print: Boompjes synagoge Rotterdam synagogue
20 x 27 cm good condition The Boompjes synagogue was a synagogue between 1725 and 1940 for Portuguese Jews from Antwerp and later High German Jews who each had their own synagogue, but joined in 1682. Since 1675, Jewish worship services have been held near the Boompjes, but it was only in 1725 that a synagogue was officially opened on this spot. The most remarkable appearance of the synagogue was the clock, which was built into the rather high façade. In the course of time, more and more Rotterdam Jews moved to other parts of the city, so that the number of visitors to the Boompjes synagogue fell sharply. As a result, the synagogue even lost the status of main synagogue. Because of the big decline, the Jewish community itself planned to get rid of the synagogue. However, it never happened, because the bombing in May 1940 did its work. After the war a new synagogue - Lew Jom - was built in 1954 at the ABN Davidsplein. In the meantime, services were held in the now defunct Western Synagogue Lew Jom in the Joost van Geelstraat, in the Middelland district. This Western synagogue, which was opened in 1928, was the only shul still functioning after the war.
