ENTARTETE KUNST CRUCIFIX PROF. GIES DEGENERATE ART
Extremely rare original photograph postcard picturing a crucified Christ in distorted anguish by Professor Ludwig Gies (1887 - 1966) photographed during the Nazi art exhibition 'DEGENERATE ART' (Entartete Kunst) in Munich in 1937. His crucifix in Lubeck Cathedral, commissioned in 1921, was held up as a typical work of degenerate art. It was probably subsequently destroyed. Ironically, in 1953 he designed the large Federal Eagle for the German Bundestag. Silver-gelatin print, 3.5 x 5.5 inches, 1937, postally unused. Very good.
