Paperbound (original wrappers). Vasco Pulido Valente (Lisbon, 1941-2020), historian and essayist, one of the most influential Portuguese intellectuals of his time. Holding a doctorate in History from the University of Oxford, he was a researcher at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais of the University of Lisbon and a regular contributor to the national press for decades. An essay on Ramalho Ortigão (Porto, 1836-Lisbon, 1915), writer, chronicler and social critic, a central figure of the Generation of 70 and co-author with Eça de Queirós of As Farpas . The text analyses Ortigão's political thought and his reading of the crisis of the Portuguese state in the second half of the nineteenth century. An early publication by Vasco Pulido Valente, predating his major historiographical work.
