Avelino Teixeira da Mota (1920-1982) was one of the most distinguished historians of Portuguese cartography and maritime expansion. A naval officer, he devoted much of his academic career to the study of historical cartography and the reconstruction of African and Asian exploration routes. This work, published by the Sociedade de Estudos de Moçambique in Lourenço Marques (present-day Maputo), is a systematic study of early cartography relating to Central Africa and the overland crossing routes between Angola and Mozambique in the period 1500-1860, combining cartographic analysis with historical sources and travel documents.
