On the left, in the upper register, a broad panoramic view of Luxembourg, the fortress-city set on rocky escarpments above the valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse: walls, gates and advanced bastioned works descend the slopes, with large churches and the stepped urban fabric standing out. In the lower register, a view of the palace and gardens of Mansfeld (the Renaissance residence of governor Peter Ernst von Mansfeld), shown with terraces, geometric parterres, water features and an enclosing wall, in a perspective that highlights the ornamental programme of the ensemble. On the right, in a vertical panel, the “Monumentum Romanum in Villa”, a tall and richly decorated Roman funerary monument, represented isolated in the foreground (traditionally identified with the Igel column near Trier).
