Stada (Stade, Saxónia Inferior). Colónia, c. 1598. - [STADE (LOWER SAXONY)]. Stada. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). View of the Hanseatic city of Stade, set among canals and river branches leading to the Elbe. The urban enclosure, surrounded by walls, ditches and ramparts, shows a dense network of streets and blocks punctuated by large parish churches and various towers. Around it stretch cultivated fields, tree-lined roads and small farms; the riverside area displays bridges, locks and piles. Out at sea numerous ships under sail emphasise the port and mercantile vocation of the city. At the top centre runs the title band STADA; in the lower right corner, a cartouche with legend identifies the main buildings and locations on the plan. Text printed on the verso in Latin under the heading STADA, with historical and economic notes; pagination “40”, from volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum.
