Novae Palmae civitas. Colónia, c. 1598. - [NOVA PALMAE CIVITAS]. Nova Palmae civitas in patria Foroiuliensi ad maris Adriatici ostium contra Barbarorum incursum à Venetis aedificata. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). Remarkable plan of the ideal fortress-city of Palmanova, in the Friuli region, represented as a star fort with nine bastions, surrounded by a continuous ditch and glacis, with three gates connected to the exterior by straight roads. The interior is organised in a radial and concentric pattern, with streets converging on a central square dominated by a tower or citadel; blocks and buildings are numbered, corresponding to a typographic legend on the verso. At lower left, title cartouche with the Latin designation; at lower right, cartouche with a description of the dimensions and defensive system (number of bastions, width and depth of ditches, total diameter of the place). In the upper corners, two medallions with coats of arms. Verso printed in Latin under the heading NOVAE PALMAE CIVITAS ANNO SALUTIS M.D.XCV. A FLORENTISSIMA VENETORUM REIP. AEDIFICATA , with descriptive text and list of the nine “ propugnacula ”, paged “68”, forming part of volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum . Palmanova was designed from 1593 onwards as a Renaissance ideal city and frontier fortress of the Republic of Venice, intended to withstand Ottoman incursions and, later, to defend the border against the Habsburgs; its star-shaped plan, attributed to Vincenzo Scamozzi, became one of the European paradigms of military urbanism in the early modern period.
