António Enes (1848-1901), an important statesman, took charge of the navy and overseas portfolio after the Ultimatum, organizing a military expedition to Mozambique. In the exercise of his functions, he reformed the terms of the crown, facilitated the transit of foreign goods through the port of Beira, signed the first concession to the Company of Mozambique, etc. After being sent to Mozambique as a royal commissioner in 1891, he returned to Lisbon in 1894, returning to that province, still at the end of the same year, to direct the campaign that pacified the province against the well-known Gungunhana, with the combats of Marracuene, Magul and Coolela and consequent imprisonment of that vain potentate, and this is the subject of his memoirs, in this second edition added with a study by Paiva Couceiro and some unpublished documents.
