The signing of the agreement was one of the high points in the process that began with Egyptian President Sadat's visit to Israel in November 1977 and his speech in the Knesset, and ended in 1982 with the completion of the withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula and its transfer to Egypt. The peace treaty signing ceremony between Israel and Egypt was held on March 26, 1979 on the North Lawn of the White House, attended by about 1,500 invitees. The ceremony began with the playing of the national anthems of the three countries and lasted about 45 minutes.
