Netherlands and Israel - a festive edition on the occasion of the wedding of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard. January, 1937
Oranje en Israel HISTORISCHE HERINNERINGEN - Netherlands and Israel - A ceremonial edition for the wedding of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard by D.S. van Zuiden. Amsterdam, January 7, 1937. A rare booklet dealing with the relationship between the Jewish community and the Netherlands, and the events of the royal wedding, accompanied by photographs from the wedding events. Dutch.
On the occasion of the princess's wedding, this booklet was published and dealt with the close ties between the Jewish community and the Dutch royal house in general and Princess Juliana in particular. The author extensively reviewed the history of the sympathetic attitude shown by the Netherlands to the Jewish people for over 300 years, and wrote about historic visits by Dutch princes to Jewish synagogues (including a photo of the document accompanying one of these visits, and of the royal family carriage stopping in front of the synagogue, as well as the visit to the Great Synagogue in April 1924, Prince Hendrik's visit to the Portuguese Synagogue in 1904, and more). He details the extensive commercial relations of Jews in the Netherlands with the princes, he tells of the famous event where Prince William V found refuge in the home of the Jew Benjamin Cohen during the revolution in Belgium - it was the Jews who fought for the beloved king's rights. Throughout the years, Dutch kings and princes always showed favor to the Jewish people. The photographs included ones about Juliana herself and the relationship between the royal house and the Jewish people, including: Her first tour of Amsterdam as a baby, Juliana at age 12, Juliana at age 18, Juliana's visit to the exhibition of tools organized by the Jewish Women's Council in The Hague in November 1933, her visit to the Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam, and more.
