"Eastward" - Magnificent travel book to Eretz Israel - Sir Moses Montefiore's copy

Eastward - a magnificent travel book to Eretz Israel - the travel book of Scottish traveler Norman Macleod's travels in Eretz Israel via Malta and Egypt. Published by ALEXANDER STRAHAN London and New York, 1866 - first edition.

Accompanied by 70 illustrations based on photographs by the English illustrator Joseph Swain, some on a full page and some in the body of the text. Sir Moses Montefiore's owner's signature on the backside protective page: "Sir Moses Montefiore Baronet", as well as a noble Ex-libris with Montefiore's name on the front and back cover lining.

The book is actually a travel diary written by Macleod as part of his tour of the East two years prior to its publication, in 1864. The book describes many sites in Jaffa, Nabi Samuel, Jerusalem inside and outside the walls, and the road from the Jerusalem area to Bethlehem, Samaria and Tiberias. On the page next to the title page is a large foldable panoramic view of Jerusalem: 62x24 cm.

Sir Moses Chaim Montefiore [1784-1885] was a Jewish philanthropist and lobbyist from England, who dedicated his life to helping Jews in various countries. He is also known as "Sir Moses Montefiore" – a title of nobility granted to him by Queen Victoria in 1837. In his 100 years of life, Montefiore received recognition and many honors for his work, including a knighthood for his actions on behalf of persecuted Jews around the world. Montefiore visited Eretz Israel seven times. In the 19th century, these tours were fraught with difficulties and dangers, both due to security conditions and road conditions. During this period, disease and poverty prevailed in the Land of Israel, and Montefiore's visit contributed greatly to the existence of the communities in the four holy cities: Jerusalem, Safed, Tiberias and Hebron.

305 p. + 70 illustrations. Original red cover with golden embossing. Remnants of paper glued to the front and back cover lining. Condition Good - Very Good.
