Khalil Raad - Jerusalem family
A Jerusalem family in traditional clothing - an early photograph (1890s) by Khalil Raad - signed in the plate C. RAAD. and PHOT. JERUSALEM.
Khalil Raad [1869-1955] was the first Arab-Christian photographer to work in Jerusalem, learning the basics of photography from the Armenian garabed krikorian, who owns a photography studio in Jerusalem. In 1897, Raad opened a photography studio in front of Krikorian's studio and a fierce competition was started between the two - especially around the photography of Emperor Wilhelm II's visit to Jerusalem in 1898. Later they became partners. Raad commemorated the Land of Israel of his time from many aspects: landscapes, archeological sites, traditional crafts, religious and pilgrimage ceremonies, ethnicities and nationalities, The old and new settlement, and more. His photographs were usually published on albums bearing romantic names for sales purposes.
Size: 18x13 cm. Adjacent to the original cardboard of Raad's photographer. Stains. Missing tear in the corners of the cardboard no damage to the photograph.
