Jacob Greenleaf (1887-1968) "Inner Harbor"
Jacob I. Greenleaf (1887 - 1968) Oil on canvas, signed lower right "J. Greenleaf" and titled "Inner Harbor" on original Greenleaf gallery label on verso, piece measures 20 x 24 inches (50.8 x 61 cm) and 28 x 32 inches with giltwood frame. A contemporary of James Jeffrey Grant, Jacob Greenleaf was born in Estonia in 1887 and studied art in Europe before immigrating to the United States and eventually settling on Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Like Grant, he exhibited during the 1930s and 1940s at the North Shore Art Association; thus his paintings were undoubtedly hung alongside Grant’s on multiple occasions. In Squam River from Andrews Bridge, Greenleaf captures a peaceful summer day along the Squam River. His vibrant colors and impressionist brushstrokes fill the scene with energy, suggesting the movement of the clouds and presence of a gentle breeze carrying boats towards the ocean.Few strokes fluoresce under UV light inspection, though these do not appear to be restorations.
Condition: The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact the auction house before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions.
