Carolus Verhaeren (1908-1956) American
Carolus Verhaeren (1908-1956) Oil on canvas laid on board, signed lower left, measures 7.5 x 10 and 14 x 16 inches with custom carved gold frame, piece comes from a San Francisco collection. Impressionist painter, Carolus C. Verhaeren, often referred to as Charles or Carol, was the son of Alphonse Verhaeren and Philomena Ven; the grandson of Flemish sculptor Victor Ven; and the nephew of well known Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren. During World War I, he and his family fled Antwerp, Belgium to London, England, where he first learned to paint. The family then moved to Canada where he studied painting with George DeVore. In 1920, he and his family immigrated to Detroit, Michigan, where for ten years he maintained an art studio. On October 5, 1935, Carolus married Leona M. Betcher in Detroit. They had three sons together, Thomas, Robert, and Karl. In 1946, Carolus, his wife, and children relocated to La Jolla, California where he established an art studio-gallery and taught art. During the 1950s he often painted scenes of the San Diego and Arizona countryside with fellow-artist, Alfred Mitchell. An impressionist artist, Carolus created coastals, landscapes, and portraits using a palette knife. His suicide was the result of a broken love affair.
