William Newton Bartholomew (1822 - 1898) Watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower right "W.N. Bartholomew 89'", piece measures 9 x 15 and 15.5 x 20.5 inches w/ frame. William Newton Bartholomew was born on September 3, 1850 in Lexington, McLean, Illinois. Artist was a painter and a teacher of drawing and painting in the Boston public schools. In the 1860s he published a series of textbooks on art education. His method was to present a series of sketches which students could copy, thereby learning to draw. Bartholomew came frequently to Post Mills in the summers, and painted there. He also spent time in Grafton, VT, and the historical society there is said to have several of his paintings.
