Nahum Gutman (1898 - 1980) Israeli
Nahum Gutman (1898 - 1980) Watercolor on Paper, Signed, Measures ( 14 x 11.5 inches ) w/frame ( 19 x 16.5 inches ) He was an Israeli painter, illustrator, sculptor and author, who became a pioneer of a style based on modern life in Israel and opposed to the old school of teaching. Nahum, or Nachum Gutman was born in Romania and emigrated to Israel with his parents in 1905. After serving in the Jewish Legion during World War I, he studied at the Herzlia Gymnasium in Tel Aviv and at Bezalel in Jerusalem (1912). In his paintings, he began portraying images of the Arab community, showing shepards and shepherdesses, farm girls washing in the orange groves etc., capturing the sensual atmosphere of the Middle East. Gutman participated in the Tower of David Exhibition in 1926, and later became a children's book author and illustrator, earning the Israeli Prize for Children's Literature in 1978. He also became known as the portrayer of life in early Tel Aviv, the story he told in many paintings and illustrations.
