William Johnson Bixbee (1850 - 1921) Oil on board, Signed Lower Left, Measures (12 x 16 inches) w/frame (12 x 19 inches) Painter, illustrator, teacher, was born in 1850 in Manchester, New Hampshire, although he lived most of his life in Boston and Marblehead, Massachusetts. He studied at the Lowell Institute, with Tommaso Juglaris, S. P. Rolt Triscott, and Marcus Waterman. Bixbee is known to have painted in oil, watercolor, and pastel, but he was more comfortable and proficient with watercolors. Starting about 1890 he devoted himself primarily to watercolors and some pastels.He became a member of the Boston Art Club in 1888. He exhibited at the Boston Art Club 1888-1909; the National Academy of Design in 1890; the Art Institute of Chicago 1897-1905; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 1908-1911; the Society of Independent Artists 1902, 1906, 1917; and the Panama-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco in 1915.
