History: very famous at the court of St. Petersburg, the artist made several portraits of members of the imperial family of Russia, including that of the Grand Duchess Elisabeth Mavrikievna (1865-1927), born Princess of Saxe-Altenburg, currently exhibited at the Regional Museum of Art Vrubek in Omsk. In the same year he painted the portrait of her husband Grand Duke Constantine Constantinovich (1858-1915), which is now in the Museum of Russian History in St. Petersburg. And in 1909, he painted the portrait of Grand Duke Wladimir Alexandrovich (1847-1909), which is in a private collection.
Provenance: This painting was in Prince Youssoupoff's bedroom, opposite his bed, on the boudoir side, on the first floor of his Parisian residence at 38 rue Pierre-Guérin, as can be seen in the photo opposite and in the photo on page 53.
