Description
A very rare Medieval Western Europe rondel dagger with wooden grip and iron details scabbard, 14th-15th C.. Straight blade of triangular section, with hollow faces, at the base a iron disc with notched border, the quilon consists in a larger disc, made of iron, chiselled with rays and provided with a long ring-nut extending toward the grip slightly convex cap with ring-nut, buttoned, decorated with nails. Complete with remains of the scarce scabbard: decorated, iron cap featuring remains of leather and chains; iron chape with two metallic cross-bars. dimensions: length 28,5 cm. The dagger is mounted on a tablet with red cloth in the frame. Rondel daggers take their name from the round disk (rondels) that form their guard. Long narrow daggers like this one are designed for thrusting, piercing and stabbing. The thin, sharp point can fit through gaps in armor, and penetrate leather or heavy fabric. Rondel daggers were worn suspended on the right side of the belt or slung from the front of it. There is some evidence to suggest that rondel daggers were popular with the emerging middle class in the mid-15th century. Merchants and tradesmen can be seen wearing them in a painting by Girat de Roussillon circa 1448. A fantastic opportunity to complete your collection with a very rare artifact from the Middle Ages.
