Height 13 inches. Ghana, Ashanti. 20th century.

Fertility wooden figures as such are believed to induce pregnancy and ensure a safe delivery of a healthy baby. Among the Ashanti, who do not have children, these stylized flat headed dolls were made, with annulated neck called "Akua ba" ( little woman) They were used by young girls and also by young mothers who would keep them clenched in their pagne to protect their pregnancy and preside over the birth of a beautiful baby.
