Mercantile Marine War Medal named to Ernest J Warne. Ernest James Warne was born in 1898 in Northfleet, Kent and served in merchant shipping during the First
World War. He died in July 1973, aged 77, in Dartford. His son Henry Ernest Warne served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War
(907872 AC1 RAFVR) and was serving with No 27 Squadron RAF at Sungai Patani airfield in Malaya when it was destroyed by Japanese bombers on 8 December
1941. The survivors of the Squadron withdrew to Singapore where Warne was captured by the Japanese on 15 February 1942. He died as a POW on 6 August 1943, aged 22, whilst working on the Burma railway and is buried at Chungkai War Cemetery in Thailand.
