Ratnasambhava seated buddah in gilt and patinated copper, possibly Tibet 17th century
h. cm. 30 (gilding worn in some places)Ratnasambhava is one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas (or 'Five Meditation Buddhas') of Tantric Buddhism and is associated with the attempt to destroy greed and pride, he can be represented with or without ornaments. The Buddha is finely cast sitting cross-legged in dhyanasana on double lotus pedestals, one with the left hand in bhumisparsa mudra, the right hand in varada mudra. He has a serene expression with his eyes lowered beneath his arched eyebrows and the urn on his forehead, flanked by pendulous earlobes, his 'snail shell' hair is meticulously highlighted. The tunic covers the left shoulder.
