To the left runs the pale frame of a window, and beyond the glass is a Paris night: the dark mass of the house opposite with its windows lit yellow, a patch of deep blue sky and a single point of light above the flowers. The paint is thick and wet-into-wet. The roses stand up in ridges of red and crimson, the cloth is dragged in broad grey-white strokes over a lighter ground, the night is laid in cool greys and ultramarine, and the lit windows are short touches of yellow. The surface is unvarnished and matte. The signature ‘C. Korovine’, in Latin script at the lower left, follows the form Konstantin Korovin used after he settled in Paris in 1923. The painting is offered as attributed to the artist: the subject, the handling and the signature are consistent with his Paris years, but the attribution rests on our own examination and is not supported by documentation or an outside opinion (see the Conditions of Sale). The canvas is offered unframed on its stretcher. It is not to be confused with the still lifes of roses and fruit Korovin painted at Gurzuf in the 1910s, which are in museum collections: this is a different picture, of the kind he painted in his years in France.
