Erma Zago - Gondolas in Venice - Bovolone VR 1880 - Milan 1942 - Oil on panel 18.5x25.5 cm - Erma Zago, a painter between the 1800s and 1900s, emerges as a key figure in the affirmation of modern art in the context of a century steeped in revolutionary innovations in all fields of knowledge, technique and art. His personal and artistic story unfolds through the crucial moments of his education, his move to Milan, and his prestigious recognition as an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy.Born into a family that enthusiastically supported his artistic inclination, Erma Zago began his education by attending drawing school in his hometown. From a young age, he showed an extraordinary artistic predisposition and, at the age of thirteen, decided to devote himself entirely to painting, successfully passing the entrance exam to the Accademia Cignaroli in Verona, where he completed his studies in 1887.1901 marked a turning point in his life, when Erma Zago decided to move to Milan, the cultural and artistic epicenter of the time. Here, her careful and passionate observation manifested itself daily in her drawing of ever-changing human faces and expressions. Her lively and festive palette finds expression in paintings that masterfully depict nannies and children, accurately documenting the evolution of both women's and men's fashion.Erma Zago's works conquer Milan's most prestigious exhibition venues, including La Società per le Belle Arti ed Esposizione Permanente, the Annual Exhibitions of the Brera Academy and the Famiglia Artistica Milanese. In 1923, King Victor Emmanuel III acquired one of his paintings, "The Pool of the Public Gardens of Milan," and destined it for the Quirinale art collections. To expand his repertoire, the artist undertook trips to numerous Italian art cities, including Rome, Venice, Naples and Verona, capturing views and vistas in photographs that he then transformed into paintings. Commissions for portraits, both oil and photographic, became increasingly numerous, evidence of Erma Zago's growing notoriety. The high point of his career came in 1924, when the Academic Council of the Brera Academy elected him an Honorary Member of the Regia Accademia, recognizing his exceptional artistic value. This prestigious recognition underscores Erma Zago's significant contribution to the artistic panorama of the 20th century, confirming his prominent position in the history of Italian art.
