Maran the Holy Rebbi Yehoshua of Belz (1825-1894) was the second Rebbe in the Belz Hasidic dynasty and the youngest son of the Holy Rebbi Sar Shalom of Belz. When he was born, his father said to his rebetzen, "A great child has been born to us, whose light will shine from one end of the world to the other." On another occasion, his father said, "My son also tries to hide himself from me, although I know that he is full of the spirit of wisdom like Joshua the son of Nun."

Even in his youth, Rebbi Yehoshua's wisdom in Torah and sharpness of mind were evident when he composed the "Shita Mekubetzet" on the order of Nezikin and the 613 commandments in verse. He was appointed to fill his father's great role as Rebbe of Belz at the age of 30 in 1855 and served as the Rebbe of thousands of Belz Hasidim for over forty years. He was one of the great Jewish leaders in Europe, and during his time, the Belz Hasidic dynasty became one of the largest Hasidic movements.

Thousands flocked to him to receive blessings and salvation, and it is said that among the Jews, there was no vegetation growing along the roads leading to Belz because of the wagons and people trampling it. He had a spirit of divine inspiration and was learned in miracles. He reached out to every Jew, and despite this, he struggled against the Haskalah movement. In 1871, he founded the "Machzikei HaDas" movement and established the first ultra-Orthodox newspaper, "Kol Machzikei HaDas."

The author Rabbi Eliezer Halevi Mishel (1863-1939/1940) was one of the greatest poskim in Galicia. Many turned to him with sensitive, complex, and difficult questions, including the greatest rabbis of his generation who sought his opinion on halakhic matters. In 1885 he was appointed as Rabbi of Goligor & in 1909 as Rabbi of Turka.

He was also knowledgeable in the treasures of the Hebrew language and wrote his Seforim in highly sophisticated Hebrew, as well as being knowledgeable in world literature, several foreign languages, and having a general education. He was an extremely eloquent speaker. His work "Mishnat Eliezer" (pilpulim and responsa) is well-known.
