CHINESE TANG DYNASTY PAINTED POTTERY FIGURE OF A KOWTOWING COURTIER - TL TESTED
Ca. AD 618 - 907. A terracotta figure of a male courtier kneeling in a position of deference, on an integral square base. The head is lifted slightly above the arms, which are hidden beneath voluminous robes pressed close to the ground. Facial features are carefully rendered, with a concentrated expression beneath a tall, peaked hat. Locks of hair extend from beneath the headgear. The wide-sleeved robe flows around the body in broad, incised folds, cinched at the waist with a belt that falls in a tied loop at the back. Traces of red and cream pigment remain on the surface. For similar see: Christie's, Live Auction 2830, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 21 March 2014, Lot 2067. Size: L:350mm / W:385mm ; 9.04kg Provenance: UK private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. This piece has been precisely dated using a thermoluminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla. The report will accompany the lot.
