AN INSCRIBED TIMURID CARNELIAN GOLD RING
Egypt or Syria, Ca. 14th-15th century AD. A gold ring of robust form with a wide tapering band, the bezel set with a vibrant carnelian intaglio stone inscribed in elegant Kufic script. The high-relief setting is composed of claw-like prongs securing the stone, with intricate engraved foliate and arabesque detailing on the shank and shoulders. The gold exhibits deep patination with traces of original niello inlay accentuating the design. The carnelian, polished to a soft luster, features a bold calligraphic inscription, likely bearing a blessing or a name.Size: D:15.29mm / US: 4 1/4 / UK: I; Weight: 5gProvenance: Property of a London Islamic art specialist collector; previously in a collection formed since the 1980s.
