EGYPTIAN STONE STOPPER WITH YOUNG SUN GOD
New Kingdom, Ca. 1550 - 1069 BC. A slender, rare stone stopper with a statuette of Harpocrates. The finely detailed portrait depicts the nude upper body of a young sun god with delineated musculature and the characteristic sidelock of youth draped over his shoulder from a bald head. The overall physiognomy comprises small eyes, a broad nose, and prominent lips. The statuette is atop a column capital adorned with lotus leaves. According to the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians, the sun god was born out of the Nun, the primaeval waters inside a blue lotus flower, which opened to reveal him on the first morning. Reviewed by Simone Musso, consultant curator for Egyptian antiquities at the Stibbert Museum, Florence, Italy, member of the Nuri Archaeological Expedition. Size: 70mm x 25mm; Weight: 40g Provenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014; Naji Asfar private collection. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
