PAIR OF EGYPTIAN FAIENCE USHABTIS WITH BLACK DETAILS
New Kingdom - Third Intermediate Period, Ca. 1069 - 945 BCA set of Egyptian faience ushabti figures. Both figures stand in mummiform pose with fused legs, holding a black-painted pick and hoe in relief atop the chest, wear seed bags behind their backs. These small figures were placed in tombs to carry out agricultural work and other manual labor on behalf of their owners in the afterlife. There were 401 shabtis in a full set: 365 workers (one for each day of the year); and 36 overseers (one for each ten-day week).
