The auction boasts strong provenances, coming from collections of Axel Guttmann, Nahum Goldmann, Joseph Klein, Countess Adelheid Lanckoronska, Elie Borowski, Marilynn Alsdorf, Mr. & Mrs. Carl Tautenhahn, the Estate of Elliott Golub, Winnetka, Alison Barker and Mrs B. Ellison. EGYPTIAN CUBE STONE STATUE OF A PRIEST
Old Kingdom period, Ca. 2575-2134 BC. A limestone block statue of a priest, carved in grey limestone. The figure is fully cloaked, with only the head and hands exposed. The head is slightly raised. Several features indicate the late period nature of this work. The body forms, such as the overhang of the arms, the external contours of the legs, and the waistline visible at the back, are so clearly delineated that they suggest a pseudo-block statue, rather than a fully cloaked block statue. Size: 75mm x 35mm; Weight: 150g. Provenance: Private UK collection; Ex. M. H. collection, Kensington, acquired on the UK art market in the 1970s.
