EGYPTIAN WOODEN STATUETTE
Old Kingdom, First Intermediate Period, Ca. 2400 - 2055. Carved from a single piece of wood, this male figure strides forward with the left leg advanced, a traditional pose for male statues. His arms are held tightly to his sides with clenched fists, and he wears a short kilt. The figure has a relatively naturalistic face with finely delineated features, including large almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, a naturalistic nose, closed lips, and a pointed chin. An echelon-curl wig with meticulously carved rectangular locks covering the ears frames the face. Traces of red, black, and white pigment further adorn the figure. His rigid posture and quiet expression reflect the ancient Egyptians' intent to depict the deceased in a manner suitable for eternity. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 58.125.3; The Brooklyn Museum, Accession Number 86.226.11. Size: 260mm x 40mm; Weight: 70g. Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired on the French market in the 1970s. This piece is accompanied by an authentication statement by Simone Musso, consultant curator for Egyptian antiquities at the Stibbert Museum, Florence, Italy, member of the Nuri Archaeological Expedition.
