ROMANO EGYPTIAN CARNALIAN AMULET OF BASTET
Late Period, Ca. 30 BC - AD 200.A Romano-Egyptian carnelian amulet depicting seated Bastet with her tail curved around her body. The front two legs, have incised lines on the paws to denote toes and to delineate the flat base. A perforation through the neck allows it to be strung as an amulet. This was a popular practice to protect the wearer, and this elegant cat represents good health.Size: 23mm x 10mm; Weight: 2.2gProvenance: Property of a London gallery; previously in a collection of a North London gentleman; formerly in a collection of Mrs B. Ellison, a deceased former member of the Egyptian Exploration Fund, bought from the 1940s, Cairo and London.
