GROUP OF ROMAN BRONZE BULLS
Ca. AD 100 - 300.A set of three Roman bronze statuettes of a bull, the first is stylised standing on four legs with a large muzzle and short frontal horns; the second features a thick neck and notched hooves. The animal is depicted as recumbent, raised head and facing forward. A long tail loops over the back, resting on the body's left side. Two small horns emerge on top of the bovine's head, above its part ears. The anatomical features have been naturalistically rendered through delicate incisions outlining the small, almond-shaped eyes, flaring nostrils, and curling mane. There is a protruding hoop on the back of the bull's head, possibly used for suspension or mounting in cooperation with the tail loop. The third is an applique or a pendant with a square base and protruding bull's head made in a naturalistic manner with a large forehead and two curve frontal horns.Size: 34-50mm x 40-45mm; Weight: 145gProvenance: Private UK collection; previously acquired on the Holland art market in the 1990s
