SUPERB CHALCIDIAN BRONZE HELMET WITH CHEEKS
Ca. 500 - 400 BC.A striking Chalcidian helmet comprised of hammered bronze, believed to originate from the Euboean city of Chalcis and often depicted in pottery. This helmet is distinguished by its curved cheekpieces, attached by thin bronze pins that form a hinge. A teardrop-shaped nose guard extends down from its raised curves, framing the eyes. The forehead features a sweeping central ridge and an overhanging brow line. Curved sides leave the ears uncovered, enhancing communication on the battlefield. Uniquely, this piece has incised square motifs on the exterior of the earflaps, likely a personal touch, perhaps added by the helmet's original owner as a mark of identification.
