EGYPTIAN ANTROPOMORPHIC WOODEN SARCHOFAGUS LID
Ca. 664 - 525 BCA stunning Egyptian wooden antropomorphic sarcophagus lid, hand-carved from cedar and covered in layers of bitumen. The face is presented with elongated ovoid eyes, a slender nose, ears, and full lips above a rounded chin. Beneath the chin is a false beard with a yellow point, and above the forehead is a highly stylised floral motif representing immortality. The verso is hollow to fit around the form of the deceased, and mortises along the verso illustrate how it would have attached to the lower sarcophagus. The verso is adorned with rosette ornamentation at the level of the usekh collar.Size: 730mm x 500mm; Weight: 7.9kgProvenance: Private UK collection, acquired on the Dutch art market; Ex.
