CYPRIOT LIMESTONE VOTIVE FIGURE
Ca. 6th Century BC.A Cypriot limestone figure depicting a standing man. The statue has a flat back and is rendered in a straight, rigid pose that derives from earlier Assyrian models. He is dressed in a short-sleeved chiton with himation layered on top, with a conical cap and hair pushed behind the ears in Egyptian-style. The almond-shaped eyes and delicately arched eyebrows are characteristic of Archaic Greek sculpture. This figure, as with much of the sculpture in Cyprus, was set up as a dedication to a god and was possibly intended to stand in for the presance of the worshipper. The flat back of the piece suggests that it was meant to be placed against the wall of a sanctuary. It is representative of the different artistic cultures available on Cyprus at the time, having been conquered by the Assyrians in the Geometric period and then the Egyptians in 570 BC. Size: 410mm x 165mm; Weight: 1.91kg Provenance: The Ach Family Collection, Cincinnati, Ohio; thence by descent to Robert Ach; European art market, 1920s.
