An issue of Zhar-Ptitsa, a literary and art magazine published by the Russian emigration in 1921-1926 in Berlin and Paris. This lot is issue 8 published in 1922. Circulation is 300 copies. The magazine is richly illustrated in color with the latest artworks of contemporary Russian artists, such as Boris Grigoriev, Konstantin Yuon, Boris Grosser. The texts are typed in pre-reform Russian spelling. Zhar-ptitsa or Firebird is a magical creature from Slavic mythology, the captor of the bird is said to get his wishes fulfilled. The lot also includes a very rare and specific original lithograph poster from the ECCE HOMO magazine with two illustrations by George Grosz: Entkleidung or Undressing and Schwere Zeiten or Hard times. George Grosz, 1893 to 1959 was a German-American painter, graphic artist and caricaturist. He is well known for his socially critical paintings and drawings, which are attributed to the New Objectivity style. In his caricatures, he mocks the ruling circles of the Weimar Republic, takes up social differences and criticizes business, politics, the military and the clergy in particular.
