ANTIQUE 1800 SATIRICAL PRINT NAPOLEON BY GILLRAY
An antique hand-colored etching, a caricature titled Democracy, or A Sketch of the Life of Buonaparte underneath. A sequence of eight images arranged in two rows, a satirical retelling of the path of Napoleon Bonaparte, 1769-1821, to the imperial French throne. Signed Js Gillray, invt & fect in the lower left. Published May 12th, 1800, by H. Humphrey, No. 27, St James's Street London, as indicated in the lower right. James Gillray, 1756-1815, was a British caricaturist and printmaker famous for his political and social satires. During the French Revolution, Gillray took a conservative stance and ridiculed the French, which greatly annoyed Napoleon, who wanted Gillray's caricatures suppressed by the British government. Hannah Humphrey, 1745–1818, was a leading London print seller of the 18th century. Black frame. Antique Historical Collectables, European Caricature Art.
Dimensions: 13 3/4 x 19 3/4. All measurements are approximate.
