Mortar. Spain, 1823
Mortar with inscriptions. Bronze. Spain, 1823. Made in bronze with a characteristic mouth and a truncated cone-shaped body developed without discontinuity and decreasing in diameter to the base. It has two handles towards its smooth mouldings. This mortar bears the inscription: ‘SOYDE D GREGORIO OCANA ANO DE MDCCCXXIII’ (1823), in capital letters and dated in Roman numerals; its signature ‘Mazon fecci’ appears with its letters inverted, both texts flanked by two simple mouldings, one above and one below, parallel to each other.
This large mortar is of the type known as a hospital mortar, as it is commonly used for making medicines in apothecaries.
Measurements: 25 x 37 x 34.5 cm.
