Abraham repudiating Hagar. According to Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669). Framed miniature. 18th century.
This small painting shows the moment when Abraham expels the Egyptian slave girl Hagar and their son Ishmael, born under the consent of Sarah, Abraham's wife, from his home. The expulsion was brought about after the birth of Isaac, the long-desired son of both parents (Genesis, ch. 21).
