The Rape of Europe. Follower of Paolo Veronese. 18th century
The Rape of Europa. Oil on canvas. Eighteenth-century (?) painting after models by the artist Paolo Veronese (Verona 1528 - Venice 1588). The subject of this work shows a scene from classical mythology
classical mythology concerning the so-called Rape of Europa, a Phoenician princess captured by Zeus, who, transformed into a white bull, hid among other cattle of her father's herd in order to abduct the young woman.
Veronese depicted the same subject in his work of 1573 in the Antecollegio in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice and another in the Museo Capitolino in Rome, dated between 1580 and 1585.
The present painting is a version of the original Capitoline o5iginal, a painting that was treated with some frequency by European painters who were followers of Veronese.
