Sculpture tribute to the politician Georges Trouillot (ca. 1901)
Bronze sculpture received on support plate of pink veined marble, French work circa 1901. Signed on the right side: "H. CHAPU".
The subject represented here, a woman in classical Greco-Roman costume, has its origin in the sculpture La Pensée created by the sculptor Henri Michel Antoine Chapu for the tomb now preserved in the Parisian cemetery of Père Lachaise of the German writer Marie d'Agoult (1805-1876), who signed her writings under the pseudonym Daniel Stern.
The model of this creation was presented at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878 where its relevance was such that it was commented and reproduced in the publication of the time Le Monde Illustré (n.º 1.115, 10 Août 1878, pp. 86 and 89; Dézamy, Adrien: "La Pensée". par Chapu; see image).
The composition created by Chapu was used for other sculptural works, such as the one we are dealing with here, where the honoree is on this occasion the French politician Georges Trouillot (1851-1916), Minister of the Colonies and Minister of Commerce, Industry, Post and Telegraphs. The base of the sculpture presents a commemorative plaque which reads: "TO GEORGES TROUILLOT / RAPPORTEUR DE LA LOI SUR LES ASSOCIATIONS / SES COLLEGUES / JANVIER - JUIN - 1901".
