3 decorative panels with Exaltation of civil character
Carved, polychrome and gilded wood.
Measurements: 230 x 25 cm; 173 x 26cm; 207 x 26 cm.
This set of three ornamental panels must have formed part of the same decoration applied as a unit to a certain architectural unit that is unknown today. The first of them, measuring 230 x 25 cm, shows the profile effigy of a male character, wearing a civil hat, circumscribed within a plant border, which in turn is supported by a pair of fantastic birds facing each other. This central motif is accompanied by three elements that appear on both sides of said border, being a flower with five petals, a figurehead and a vase. The second and third panels show decoration from the 16th century, derived from Italian candelieri-based motifs, together with elements that represent the so-called cornucopia and fingered and ringed palmettes (measures 173 x 26 cm and 207 x 26 cm, respectively). The reverses of the pieces preserve the traces left by the carpenters of the 16th century when they used their gouges to work these pieces. Due to the typology and the elements that are represented by carving, painting and gilding, we think that they are panels possibly made in Castile (Spain) between the years 1500-1550 of the 16th century.
